The two-day Duel in the Pool, held at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre venue which will also host swimming at next year's Commonwealth Games, sees swimmers competing for points across a range of events.

The US team will be missing top names including Missy Franklin and Ryan Lochte, a late withdrawal to injury, but still consist of a formidable list of names.

These include the 800 metres freestyle Olympic champion and world record holder Katie Ledecky, 10 times world medallist Jessica Hardy and reigning Olympic 200m backstroke champion Tyler Clary.

The US triumphed two years ago at the last event in Atlanta and will be confident of doing so once again in Glasgow.

However, fresh from last weeks European Short-course Championships in Herning, the European challenge will also be strong, despite a number of injury-induced withdrawals.

The latest team includes the likes of the Netherlands double Olympic champion Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Denmark's freestyle pairing of Lotte Frijs and Jeanette Ottesson-Grey and France's 200m freestyle world and Olympic champion Yannick Agnel.

There will also be plenty of homegrown Scottish talent, including Olympic silver medal winner Michael Jamieson, 2011 World Championship medal winner Hannah Miley and freestyle star Robbie Renwick.

"I am really looking forward to the world-renowned Duel in the Pool coming to Glasgow this weekend," said Renwick.

"It won't be an easy competition as the US are a strong side but with the home crowd supporting us and one of the most powerful European teams we've ever had, we're hoping to push them harder than ever before.

"This weekend will be extra special for me because it is being held in my hometown with the local crowds supporting us.

It is a fantastic opportunity for us to try out the newly refurbished Tollcross International Swimming Centre, it will give athletes and spectators alike a taste of what to expect at Glasgow 2014."

The excitement, both for the swimmers and for Glasgow hosting the event, was described by Councillor Archie Graham, executive member for Commonwealth Games 2014 and Chair of Glasgow Life.

"It will be fantastic to have the world's best swimmers go head to head in front of a passionate Glasgow crowd this weekend," he said.

"I've no doubt Europe will be gunning for glory against the US team which boasts some of the finest athletes in the world.

"The finest of Scotland's talent - Michael Jamieson, Robbie Renwick, Hannah Miley and Craig McNally - will all be competing and I really hope the people of Glasgow turn out in their droves to support them!

"A primary focus of bringing exciting events to the city is to inspire young people to get involved in sport and create a legacy that will last for generations so I am delighted that some of the younger members of the City of Glasgow swim team will get the opportunity to watch the elite European and US swimmers in training.

"This will be sure to help towards motivating these aspiring athletes to realise their potential."

The two day event is due to get underway on Friday (December 20) and tickets are available to buy here.
