After being officially lit by Pope Francis in Vatican City on November 6, the Torch spent two days in Rome visiting a number of sites including Government buildings and the offices of the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and Prime Minister Enrico Letta.

From there it went north to 2006 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games host city Turin, which has also played host to the Winter Universiade in 2007, as well as two summer Games in 1958 and 1970.

After visiting the University of Turin and being carried through the streets of the city by a number of local athletes the Torch crossed the international border to stop off in Lausanne.

The Swiss city is home to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and also the International University Sports Federation (FISU), who organise the Universiade.

The Torch, known as the "Gentian of the Alps", visited FISU headquarters where it was greeted by general secretary Eric Saintrond before making an appearance at the opening of an annual sports event called City Events and also showed up at the end of the "Understanding the power of technology in sport", Conference, organised at the Rolex Learning Centre by AISTS (International Academy of Sports Science and Technology), that includes among its founding members the IOC and the Universities of Lausanne and Geneva.

From there the Torch, which was designed by the University of Trento's Industrial Engineering department under the slogan "Inspired by You" and aims to symbolise the mix of sport, research and technological innovation characterising the 26th Universiade, visited the Olympic Museum where it was greeted by museum director Francis Gabet and the IOC's head of University Relations at the Olympics Research Centre, Nuria Puig Brandes. 

The Torch is due to cross back into Italy for the next leg of its journey in Pisa before heading to Bergamo and Milan.

It is also scheduled to make further international visits to Brussels, Paris and 1976 Winter Olympics host city Innsbruck in Austria.
