September 13 - Britian's Faye McClelland celebrates her fourth Paratriathlon world title win in Hyde ParkBritain's Faye McClelland bagged her fourth International Triathlon Union (ITU) Paratriathlon World Championship gold in London's Hyde Park today, while the home crowds were also treated to wins for Matt Emerson, Melissa Reid, Dave Ellis, Jane Egan and Chris Goodwin.

Despite spending most of the season away from the sport to complete her dissertation for her university degree, McClelland showed her class at the biggest event of the year as she returned to head a British one-two-three in the women's Tri4 category.

The woman from Middlesex crossed the line first ahead of former Paralympic swimmer Lauren Steadman in second and Barcelona 1992 swimming gold medallist Clare Cunningham in third.

"I had so many doubts and today, more so than ever," said the 33-year-old who has won four consecutive world titles.

"I knew I had to work hard on the bike.

"I eventually passed Lauren [Steadman] on the bike; I didn't know I'd be able to do that so I'm ecstatic."

Emerson has also endured an interrupted season following a rugby injury earlier this year, but the 26-year-old followed McClelland's lead by returning to London and retaining his World Championship crown in the Tri5 category.

"I'm ecstatic, I really can't believe it, I'm so happy," said the man from Kent.

Another athlete who knows what it is like to sit atop the World Championship podium made it three world titles in four years as Jane Egan won back her world crown in the women's Tri1 race, finishing ahead of teammate Karen Darke.

"This is such a big race to be able to win in, it's amazing," said Egan.

"I got silver last year so I'm absolutely thrilled.

"I think my bike was probably really one of my best."

British success continued to steadily flow like the currents of the nearby Thames in a sport due to make its debut in the Paralympics at Rio 2016 as Ellis, Goodwin and Reid took top honours in the blind and visually impaired categories.

Ellis and former Paralympic swimmer Reid won gold in the men's and women's Tri-6b classes respectively, while Goodwin triumphed in the men's Tri-6a class.

"It was awesome," said Ellis, who is competing in his first season of Paratriathlon.

"The support was amazing.

"We thought we'd have a chance at a medal and that if everything went well we'd be close, and it did go well."

Meanwhile, the red, white and blue wave of success was interspersed with notable victories for the likes of Australia's Bill Chaffey, Stephane Baher of France, Canada's Jennifer Hopkins and the United States Megan Fisher, all of whom added another world title to their previous wins at this level.

Baher made it a hat-trick of wins in the men's Tri2 race while Chaffey left it late to overhaul Dutchman Jetze Plat on the final lap to bag his fourth world crown in the Tri1 class.

"I don't know how I did that, at the start of the swim I just saw him [Plat] take off and thought 'who the hell is that,' I got out and was told he had a minute and a half on me out of the swim and then in the bike I was getting time calls from [my] coach and he was getting further and further and further in front and he was well over two minutes ahead of me before I started the run but I don't know," said the Australian.

"I've done a lot of work in this wheelchair over the last 12 months, it's obviously paid it.

"This is my fourth World Championship and it is the sweetest.

"It's the first time I've come from behind and so this is the happiest win I think I've ever had."

London 2012 cycling gold medallist Fisher won her third world title in the women's Tri5 category, while her North American neighbour Hopkins also made it three World Championship wins in the Tri3 class.

At the other end of the scale, there were maiden World Championship titles for the Ukraine's Vasyl Zakrevskyi in the men's Tri-6a category, Spain's Diego Velazquez Rodriguez in the men's sprint distance while Martin Schultz of Germany saw off the challenge of America's Chris Hammer to take gold in the men's Tri4 class.

"It is my first world title, last year I was second and it was not so fun, but this year I just can't imagine it," said the delighted Schultz.

"[Rio] 2016 is my absolute focus, but I know I have to do better on the bike and the run."
