August 31 - Angola captain Carlos Almeida receives the African Basketball Championship trophy from Ivory Coast sports minister Alain LobognanCarlos Morais was the hero for Angola as he top-scored with 21 points to help his side win back the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) African Championship title against rivals Egypt in Abidjan.

Despite a 15-point haul from Sheriff Abdalla, the Egyptians could not carry on their fine form which seen them come into the final on the back of three successive wins over Cape Verde, defending champions Tunisia and Senegal to get to their first continental decider since 1994.

They had not looked like getting anywhere near the latter stages of the knockout rounds after going down to defeat in the opening three pool games, whereas Angola came into the final unbeaten in the entire tournament.

The opening exchanges saw both sides trade scores, before early in the second quarter, with the game tied at 17-17, three consecutive baskets from Joaquim Gomes gave the Angolans a lead that they would not relinquish.

Gomes, Felisardo Ambrosio and Eduardo Mingas were impressive throughout for the Angolans, who never looked in any real danger, picking off a tired looking Egyptian side with a constant stream of scores to eventually run out 57-40 winners and claim their 11th African title, and banishing the memories of their 2011 loss to Tunisia in Antananarivo.

"I am pleased for this recognition, but this is down to our team work," said the impressive Morais, who was named as tournament MVP (Most Valuable Player).

"I would have never received it if it were not for my teammates.

"We deserved to win this Championship because of the sacrifice we have been through in the past few months."

A disappointed Egypt coach Amr Aboul-Kheir paid tribute to Angola and said he was proud of his young squad whose performance in Abidjan was a vast improvement on the side's 11th place finish two years ago.

"Angola played well," he said.

"They were the best team in the tournament, but with this group of players, we must be optimistic.

"My players are young and very hardworking."

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the tournament was the performance of reigning champions Tunisia, who by failing to finish in the top three, along with fellow African representatives at London 2012 Nigeria, have missed out on an automatic qualification spot for next year's FIBA World Cup in Spain.

Champions Angola, Egypt and third placed Senegal, who caused an upset by defeating hosts Ivory Coast 57-56 in a pulsating bronze medal match, are the sides definitely assured of flying the African flag at the showpiece event in Madrid next year and will go on to the next stage of Olympic qualifying for Rio 2016.
