Luca Parlato, Vincenzo Abbagnale and coxswain Enrico D'Aniello have won the men's coxed pair world title in ChungjuAugust 30 - Italy were the standout nation on the second day of finals at the World Rowing Championships in Chungju, taking gold in the coxed pair and the lightweight men's eight along with a silver and two bronze medals in other events.

Luca Parlato, Vincenzo Abbagnale and cox Enrico D'Aniello continued their nation's fine tradition of success in the men's coxed pair, taking gold in a time of 7min 09.15sec whilst Abbagnale followed in the footsteps of his father Giuseppe, who won gold in the event at the Seoul Olympics in 1988.

Germany took silver, coming in behind the Italians in 7:12.34, whilst France took bronze just over a second behind.

Denmark's Henrik Stephansen came out on top in the lightweight men's single sculls to successfully defend his title, edging out rivals Jeremie Azou of France and Pedro Fraga of Portugal in one of the day's most anticipated match-ups.

Michaela Taupe-Traer of Austria finally ended her 22-year wait for a world title in the lightweight women's single sculls, coming in in 7min 50.62sec ahead of Greece's Aikaterini Nikolaidou in second and Ruth Walczak of Great Britain who took bronze. 

There was another bronze for Britain in the lightweight men's double sculls, as the pairing of Sam Scrimgeour and Mark Aldred came in behind silver medallists Ella Luini and Martino Goretti, and the Swiss winners Simon Niepmann and Lucas Tramer.

Greece took gold in the men's quadruple sculls ahead of silver medallists Germany and bronze medallists Italy and the Netherlands won the women's equivalent ahead of the USA- who had led at the halfway stage- in second and Italy, who claimed another bronze. .

Finals action will continue tomorrow, where the formidable duo from New Zealand, Hamish Bond and Eric Murray, will be going for a record in unbeaten races in the men's pair, where they could notch up their 16th consecutive international win, but they will face tough competition from Olympic silver medallists Dorian Mortelette and Germain Chardin of France.

Unbeaten British duo Helen Glover and Polly Swann will face a real test in their women's pair final where they will come up against the likes of Romania's Roxana Cogianu and Nicoleta Albu and American pair Taylor Goetzinger and Meghan Musnicki.

Laura Milani and Elisabetta Sancassani will be attempting to continue Italy's success from today in tomorrow's lightweight women's double sculls final, and with an unbeaten season behind them, it marks a great chance for Italy to claim their first ever women's world senior title.
