small picAugust 10 - Paralympic runners-up Ukraine went one better in finishing on the top of the podium at the Cerebral Palsy International Sports and Recreation Association (CPSIRA) Intercontinental Cup in Barcelona as they defeated Brazil 1-0 in the final.

After knocking out number one seeds and reigning Paralympic champions Russia in the semi-finals Brazil have been the tournament's surprise package, yet despite battling hard they were ultimately outdone at the final hurdle by an impressive Ukrainian outfit.

In a very even game where both teams played with great intensity, Ukraine displayed superior ability to pass and play between the lines and consequently created more opportunities to attack.

This eventually resulted in the only goal of the game courtesy of Vitali Romanchuk in the 46th minute.

After cruising through their group unbeaten, Ukraine swept aside Argentina 7-1 and Ireland 9-0 to reach the final and - although Brazil posed a much tougher test - they were clearly the deserved winners.

Russia avenged their surprise semi-final defeat by beating Ireland 4-0 in the bronze medal match, with a brace of goals by Georgiy Albegov complemented by further strikes by Alexey Chesma and Lasha Murvanidze.

Elsewhere in the classification matches, the Netherlands beat Argentina 2-1 to secure fifth place while Scotland held off the United States in a high-scoring encounter to take seventh position.

The US did receive the Fair Play Award at the Closing Ceremony to partially make amends for that defeat, while Wanderson Silva of Brazil was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) accolade.

The final two awards were unsurprisingly taken by members of the Ukranian gold winning team as Oleksandr Devlysh received the top-scorer award and Konstantyn Symsdhko was named the tournament's best goalkeeper.

Attention will now turn to the 2014 Continental Championships before the World Championships in 2015 where both Russia and Brazil will be out to gain revenge on Ukraine ahead of the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro the following year.
