Matthew Cowdrey on blocksApril 28 - Thirteen-time Paralympic gold medallist Matthew Cowdrey has dropped the strongest hint yet that he intends to compete at Rio 2016, despite himself believing that London 2012 would be his final Games appearance.

Cowdrey spoke after securing his place in the 50 metres freestyle event at the IPC Swimming World Championships with his performance in the heats this weekend, which are due to take place in Montreal in August.

''Coming back, I realised I do actually miss racing and I do really enjoy it,'' said the 24-year-old, who took a five-month break from swimming after becoming Australia's most-decorated Paralympian of all-time in London last summer with five gold, two silver and a bronze.

''That's the thing that at the end of the day is the most exciting thing about our sport and something I think I'd struggle to walk away from.

"At the moment anyway.''

''[But] at the end of the day it's my own decision and it's what I want to do.

"I think the momentum is still there,''

Cowdrey, who has 23 medals in total from three Paralympic Games appearances, is currently regaining his fitness following his post-London 2012 break, and will only compete in the 50m freestyle, breaststroke and butterfly events at the national championships at the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre in his home city of Adelaide.
