The competition in the Indonesian capital will take place from September 26 until 29 in what will be the third edition of the tournament after it was first staged by basketball's world governing body in Rimini in 2011 and the Spanish city of Alcobendas earlier this year.

The Championships will follow the same competition format as past editions with men's and women's tournaments as well as individual contests.

At least 48 teams made up of 24 men's and 24 women's teams from more than 35 countries are expected to compete.

"We are extremely pleased to stage the 2013 FIBA 3x3 U18 World Championships in Indonesia, giving the country its first major FIBA event," said FIBA secretary general Patrick Baumann, who is also a International Olympic Committee (IOC) member.

"New markets like Mexico and South Africa were very keen to host this event, which proves that interest in 3x3 is truly global.

"It is a discipline that is opening new horizons for FIBA and basketball.

"This is another very important step on our path to have 3x3 included in the basketball programme at the 2016 Olympics in Rio."

3x3 basketball became hugely popular following a successful debut at the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games 

The teams that perform the best at the 2013 FIBA 3x3 U18 World Championships will directly qualify for the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games.

It was at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in 2010 that 3x3 basketball was first played in international competition and after proving hugely successful, FIBA decided to create the Under-18 World Championships.

The selection of teams for the World Championships, as well as for the selection of teams for the Youth Olympic Games, is based on both sport's and development's criteria to allow both the strongest on the field as well as the most active countries to participate in the event.
