Para badminton_generic_Sept_16September 16 - Badminton is aiming to win a place at the Paralympics in 2020, with the Badminton World Federation (BWF), the sport's governing body, claiming the sport would be "a positive addition" to the Games programme.

The sport tried to gain inclusion in the Paralympic programme for Rio 2016, but was unsuccessful.

Instead, canoe and triathlon will make their debuts.

Bidding for a 2020 spot, badminton could go up against the likes of powerchair football, golf and taekwondo.

In a release the BWF said: "It's clear that Badminton must be a part of future Paralympic celebrations of sport.

"Para-Badminton would be a positive addition to the sports programme for the 2020 edition of the Paralympic Games.

"In its 2009/2010 bid for inclusion in Rio 2016, the BWF learned that it needed to do more for Para-Badminton and to position the sport well for inclusion."

Acting on this, the BWF have integrated the sport into their governance and management structure, and have been recognised by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

Para badminto_match_Sept_16The Badminton World Federation has implemented new regulations to support the sport's bid for inclusion at the 2020 Paralympic Games

The BWF have also reviewed the game's rules and implemented new regulations regarding classification, as well as increasing funding for the disability sport.

However, there is still a long way to go in the race to win placement on the programme in 2020.

The IPC will be sending out application information to potential bidding sports by the end of 2013.

A final decision will then be made during the second half of 2014, although detailed timings have not been confirmed yet.

insidethegames also understands that a decision is yet to be made on how many new sports could be included in 2020.

There will be 22 sports included on the programme for Rio 2016.
