July 17 - Spain's Javier Gomez (pictured) today sent out a powerful message to Britain's Alistair Brownlee when he beat Germany's Jan Frodeno in front of a huge crowd in Hamburg to win the fourth round of the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championships Series.

After a slow start to the season due to a hip injury, the 2008 world champion is clearly back to his best.

Gomez claimed victory the win with a last-lap surge to edge out Frodeno, the heavy crowd favourite.

Gomez finished the race with an amazing 29min 17sec 10 kilometres run split in a race missing defending world champion Brownlee, who was preparing for next weekend's World Championships series race in Hyde Park.

"I knew Jan would be the one to beat going into this race," said Gomez, beaten by Brownlee at the European Championships earlier this month.

"He's shown amazing form all year long and I knew he'd have a little extra motivation from racing in front of a German crowd.

"Jan was very tough today, but it feels so good to be back in first place again."

Britain's Tim Don finished third, 50 seconds behind Gomez.

Don, the 2006 world champion, was among the leading group going into the final discipline but Frodeno and Gomez broke away on the second lap.

Gomez clinched victory when he pulled away with two kilometres left.

"Javier was too strong today," said Frodeno.

"When he kicked on that final lap I had nothing left. I couldn't go with him."

Gomez eventually crossed the line 16 seconds ahead of Frodeno.

"I knew Jan would be faster than me if I let it come down to a sprint," Gomez said.

"So I gave everything I had at the beginning of that last lap.

"I believed that I could do it if I put everything I had in the final lap and I was able to pull away."

Don (pictured) was happy with his performance.

"This is the first time I’ve finished on the podium in a World Championships Series race so I’m very pleased," said the 32-year-old Londoner.

"I had a great swim.

"The lead group wasn’t really committed on the bike but I knew the last two-three kilometres would be important so I got into my rhythm ready for the run.

"Jan and Gomez had a good start and I realised I was racing for third.

"It’s not the way I like to race but I couldn’t go with them today.

"I used my speed well and got onto the podium.

"It’s such a great crowd here in Hamburg, racing here is unreal, and really hard to describe.

"It shows how big triathlon has become in Europe and I’m happy to be a part of it at the front, racing for the medals."

"London is the one I really want.

"I will fly home tomorrow, rest up and try to enjoy it. I know I am in great shape.”

With his second-place finish, Frodeno now takes over the lead in the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series rankings, with an advantage of only one point over Russia's Alexander Brukhankov, who had lead the Series since round two in Seoul.

The women's race in Hamburg is due to take place tomorrow.
