July 11 - South Africa's world 800 metres champion Caster Semenya is to concentrate on the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi after deciding that she will not be fit enough to be ready in time for the African Championships at the end of this month.

Semenya, who was given the green-light to resume her career last week after doubts about her gender were lifted by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), is due to make her comeback in Finland on Thursday (July 15).

But Athletics South Africa (ASA) said Semenya have left out of the 42-member team for the continental championships, which are due to open on July 28, named today after speaking to Semenya's coach, Michael Seme.

The 19-year-old, who has not raced since winning the world title in Berlin last August, will instead concentrate on the Commonwealth Games, which are due to open on October 3.

"Semenya will work towards reaching peak condition in order to be a part of the action at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India in October,” ASA said in a statement.

ASA said they would assist her in "obtaining race opportunities as part of her preparations for the international event".

Seme said he was not expecting her to clock spectacular times when she returns to the track because she has not raced in 11 months.

"She is going to run some small meetings in Europe, but we are not expecting fast times yet," he said.

"These meetings will just be tests to remind her body what it's like to race.

"We will now start preparing her for the Commonwealth Games."
