February 4 - Poznan has increased its proposed budget for the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics by 20 per cent, adding an extra $15 million (£9.5 million) to the contingency section of the budget.

The decision, taken by Poznan City Council, means that the budget now stands at $80 million (£51 million).

It follows criticism in the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Evaluation Commission report, published last month, that warned that the Polish city's "budget appears low in a number of key areas and may not be sufficient to cover the proposed levels of service described in the candidature file".

Nanjing, Poznan's only rival to host the Games following the withdrawal of Mexican city Guadalajara, has a budget of $117.4 million (£73.09 million).

In addition to this $80 million commitment, Poznan has also re-confirmed that should there be any shortfall on this figure, then this is also guaranteed by the City Council.

Poznan city Mayor Ryszard Grobelny said: "Our experience in hosting many major events in our city gives us confidence that we can deliver a magnificent Youth Olympic Games with the budget that we had allocated for this event.

"However, to demonstrate our determination to the IOC that this city will do whatever it takes to host spectacular Games in 2014, we have today decided to add an additional $15 million to our contingency budget.

"I have written to the IOC to inform them of this decision and to confirm that this city will do whatever is necessary to ensure that awarding the rights to host this second edition of the Youth Olympic Games to Poznan, will create no risk whatsoever for the IOC or for the whole Olympic movement."

The IOC is due to choose the host city during its Session in Vancouver on February 10.
