January 29 - Poznan has agreed a deal to begin building a new residential development that will become the Athletes' Village if the Polish city is awarded the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games next month.



Ryszard Grobelny, the Mayor of Poznan, ratified the agreement with the Chancellor of the University of Poznan to commence building the state-of-the-art complex that will later provide accommodation for the students the university.

It is important milestone in the and bid ensures that the design and construction phase of this huge new development of three and four stories high buildings is right on schedule, Poznan officials claimed.

Poznan are currently the second favourites to be awarded the Games behind Nanjing, the former capital of China.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is due to choose the host city at its Session in Vancouver on February 10.

When completed, the Village in Poznan will provide a total of 2,700 modern high-tech rooms with more than 5,000 beds.

The ultra modern development will create a really compact village, allowing all the young athletes at the Games to live together in the one village and to truly enjoy the special atmosphere of an Olympic Games officials said.

In the heart of the development will be the Village Square, a large outdoor friendly, meeting place for the athletes from so many nations to relax, eat and drink or just hang out, Poznan officials said.

Also in the Village will be a 2,500 seat restaurant, several shops, recreation facilities and a Digital Media Centre with more than 500 terminals available to the athletes.
