altMay 25 - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has signed technology services provider Atos Origin as a global sponsor until 2016, it was announced today.

The value of the deal was not disclosed, but the Franco-Belgian company is believed to have paid around $80-$100 million (£50-£63 million) to associate its brand with the Olympics.

It becomes the IOC's fourth top-line commercial partner for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and the 2016 Summer Games.

Panasonic and Samsung have also committed until 2016, while Coca-Cola is signed through 2020.

Atos Origin has been an IOC partner since 2001 and assigned 4,000 staff to work on the 2008 Beijing Games, providing systems to manage competition entries, results, plus accreditation and IT security services.

Jacques Rogge, the President of the IOC, said: "The Olympic Games would not happen without the use of information technology.

"We rely on Atos Origin's world-class expertise and experience.

"Atos Origin, our long-term partner, is the brains behind the technology operations for the Olympic Games, consistently delivering high-quality services on schedule.

"The Beijing Olympic Games were spectacular and Atos Origin provided a crucial role in ensuring the success of the event from a technological perspective, and in making sure that the IT systems functioned perfectly.

"We are confident that Atos Origin will once again deliver an outstanding job for future Games."

Thierry Breton, the chairman and chief executive of Atos Origin, said: "We are particularly proud of our long-term partnership with the International Olympic Committee - a relationship based on enduring trust.

"As part of our mission for the Olympic Games, we are committed to delivering excellence and will continue to further improve our service from one Olympiad to the next.

"Managing this highly complex project and co-ordinating all the necessary cutting-edge technologies requires exceptional expertise to combine processes, technologies and the skills of both our staff and of other partners."

The IOC has signed nine global partners for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and 2012 Summer Games in London.

They are Acer, Atos Origin, Coca-Cola, GE, McDonald's, Omega, Panasonic, Samsung and Visa.

The IOC hopes to add at least one more to meet a target of $1 billion (£628 million) in revenues from top-line sponsors for the 2009-12 Olympic cycle.

The host city for the 2016 Olympics will be chosen in a poll of IOC members in Copenhagen on October 2.

The candidates are Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo.
