Triathlon mixed relay, which features a combined team of male and female triathletes, was voted onto the sports programme at the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) General Assembly in St Kitts and Nevis last November following recommendations from the CGF Sports Review Committee, and Glasgow 2014 have taken up the option to stage the sport.

It will appear as one of 17 sports that will be held across the 11 days of competition in the Scottish city and the move has been warmly welcomed by International Triathlon Union (ITU) President Marisol Casado of Spain.

"Triathlon mixed relay is a young, fresh and innovative sport which embraces the ideals of teamwork and gender equality," said Casado, who is also an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member.

"We feel that that it will fit perfectly with the ethos of Glasgow 2014.

"We are delighted the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee has embraced this exhilarating event."

As well as triathlon, the big winners from the Glasgow 2014 sports programme are Parasport athletes and female athletes as there will be more medals than ever before available for both.

For Parasport athletes, 22 medals will be available for them at Glasgow 2014 and Para-track cycling will be included in the Commonwealth Games for the first time ever.

New participation and medal opportunities for female athletes come in the sport of shooting but all the additions will be delivered within existing Games budgets, planning and resources.


"Following the completion of the Commonwealth Games Federation Sports Programme Review, Glasgow 2014 is delighted to announce a final sports programme which is true to our vision of delivering an outstanding athlete centred and sports focused Games for Scotland that is on time and on budget," said Glasgow 2014 chief executive David Grevemberg (pictured above).

"I'm delighted that in delivering 17 sports over 11 days of competition we have been able to increase our commitments to competition and medal opportunities by offering greater opportunities for female and Parasport athletes and I'm especially proud that Glasgow 2014 will offer more events and medal opportunities for Parasport athletes than any Commonwealth Games in history."

In total, the sports programme for Glasgow 2014 will feature 256 medal events.

The finalisation of a Sports Programme has also been welcomed by the Scottish Government, with an estimated worldwide television audience of over one billion set to watch the competition, which will run from July 23 to August 3.

"Glasgow 2014 is set to be the biggest and most inclusive Commonwealth Games, with new events for female and Para-Sport athletes within a fantastic sports programme of more than 250 medal events across 17 sports and over 11 days of competition," said Scotland's Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport Shona Robison.

"This will be the biggest multisport event that Scotland has ever hosted and the Sports Programme will build excitement among athletes and give Scots a taste of what's to come in just over two years' time."
