The tickets are part of a contingency set aside from the one million total tickets released for the Games and following the finalising of venue layouts and seating plans across the 13 venues being used this summer, including here at the National Hockey Centre in Glasgow Green, fans now have the chance to get their hands on tickets to some of the most sought after sessions.

Tickets are available across all 17 sports as well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and are priced at £15 ($24.50/€18) for adults while half-price concession tickets for under 16s and over 60s are available from £7.50 ($12.25/€9).

"The great thing about this sale is that we have tickets in every single sport and in every single session on every day of action while there are also tickets for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies," Glasgow 2014 chief executive David Grevemberg told insidethegames here, where he was joined to mark the launch of the ticket sales by pupils from the Glasgow School of Sport.

"The first phase we just had unprecedented ticket sales and had over 2.3 million applications.

"We are really, really delighted with how things are going so far.

"We are confident that when the rest of the tickets go on sale on May 12 people are going to respond."

The Glasgow 2014 ticketing programme was launched in August last year and organisers claim that well over 90 per cent of tickets have been snapped up for the 11-day event which runs from July 23 to August 3.

Also on May 12, Glasgow 2014 say they will begin to send out tickets to those who bought them during the first phase of sales "so people can actually start to feel it [excitement] and start to plan for the Games", according to Grevemberg.
