April 23 - 30 more athletes have been named to the Team Scotland squad for Glasgow 2014 ©Commonwealth Games ScotlandTeam Scotland has revealed the names of 30 more athletes who will be competing on home soil at this year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as nine boxers, 14 wrestlers and seven Para-sport lawn bowlers make the cut.

Ten of the athletes named today have appeared at a Commonwealth Games before, including boxer Josh Taylor, who claimed silver at Delhi 2010, and wrestling twins Fiona and Donna Robertson who won judo bronze – Donna at Auckland 1990 and Fiona at Manchester 2002 – before making the switch to wrestling for the Delhi 2010 Games.

London 2012 quarter-finalist Taylor is joined on the boxing squad by fellow Delhi 2010 competitors Joe Ham and Ross Henderson, while Charlie Flynn and Kieran Smith are making the step up from the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man.

Aqeel Ahmed, Reece McFadden, Scott Forrest and Stephen Lavelle will be making their Team Scotland debuts in Glasgow while the final spot on the 10-man team will be decided at a later date.

A strong Para-sport lawn bowling team, led by 2011 singles world champion Kevin Wallace, will head to the Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre looking to secure a first gold in the Games since 2002 when David Heddle, Ivan Prior and John Robertson secured the men's triples title.

Wallace and Michael Simpson took World Championship bronze in the B6/B7/B8 pairs competition in 2011 and along with Billy Allan, they have already tasted success on the Kelvingrove green when they took top honours at the 2013 Eight Nations Commonwealth Invitational Championships.

They will be joined by B2/B3 mixed pair Robert Conway and Irene Edgar who took bronze at those Championships, while they also secured bronze at last year's International Blind Bowls Association World Championships, where Conway took individual gold.

Conway and Edgar will be supported by directors Ron McArthur and David Thomas, who for the first time are classed as athletes and will be eligible to receive any medals won.

"All of our bowlers have worked very hard to be selected and are extremely worthy of the honour," said head coach Bob Dick.

"We certainly have the capability of winning medals in both events, however we cannot be complacent, because there will be serious opposition from the world number one disabled bowling nation, South Africa, as well as Australia, who will be serious medal contenders.

"They are hungry for success, and with intensive training between now and the Games I am optimistic about the team's chances."

Seven of the 14 wrestlers selected will be making their Games debuts including Brian Harper, Ross McFarlane, Alex Gladkov, Lewis Waddell, Shannon Hawke and Chelsea Murphy, while Gareth Jones makes the step up to senior level after representing Scotland at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India.

Jayne Clason, Kathryn Marsh, Sarah Jones, Viorel Etko and Joseph Luigi Bianco join the Robertson twins as wrestlers with previous Games experience.

Making the announcement, Team Scotland Chef de Mission Jon Doig, said: "Huge congratulations to all of the athletes who have been selected for Team Scotland.

"There has been a competitive selection process across the three sports, which has demonstrated the wealth of talent we have in Scotland.

"Every athlete with a place on the team has clearly demonstrated their ability to meet the selection standards set and has earned the right to compete for Team Scotland.

"Today's announcement brings us well past the 100 mark in terms of selected athletes for the Games, and we are on track to achieve our goal of having our largest ever team in Glasgow.

"Alongside that, it is clear that we have the quality within the team to help us achieve our main goal of having our most successful ever Games."

Team Scotland is expecting to name around 270 athletes for the Glasgow 2014 Games which run from July 23 to August 3.
