Police Scotland will still have overall control of security for the Games, which are due to take place from July 23 to August 3, but an agreement with the Home Office means that military personnel, as well as private security firms, including perimeter security provider Selex ES, will offer additional support.

Robison said the Army presence at the London 2012 Olympics - military personnel were drafted in after security firm G4S failed to supply the staff it promised for the Games - enhanced security, while increasing the public's confidence.

"I have therefore agreed with Police Scotland and the organising committee to deploy a mixed workforce involving police, military and private industry resources to ensure a safe, secure and peaceful Games," she said.

"To assist with this, the Chief Constable of Police Scotland requested military assistance from UK Government.

"I am pleased to announce that yesterday I received confirmation from the Home Secretary that the request had been supported in full and that the intention is that the UK Government will wholly absorb the costs of this resource.

"This is a welcome development which illustrates the cooperation between both Governments to ensure the security of the Games."

Robison has requested that the Royal Regiment of Scotland be considered for the role.
