Demand for tickets to see Glasgow 2014 has outstripped supply, with some events being up to 25 times oversubscribedSeptember 30 - Fans who applied to buy tickets for next year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow were today beginning to find out whether or not they had been successful.

Scottish organisers have started to contact the hundreds of  thousands who have applied to watch some of the world-class competition take place in venues across the city next summer.

In the next few days all ticket applicants will be contacted via letter or email.

During the four-week allotted window, there were 2.3 million requests for up to one million tickets.

Proving particularly popular from the 17 sports on offer was track cycling at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodorome, which received 25 times more requests than the number of tickets available.

There was also an excess of 100,000 applications made for the 100 metres men's final at Hampden Park.

Other sports which were oversubscribed included diving, swimming, mountain bike, artistic gymnastics, judo, shooting and triathlon.

Tickets for the most popular events will be allocated in a "fair draw process", organisers said.

Many applicants took to Twitter to express their joy or disappointment after being contacted by Glasgow 2014.

Graham Farquharson from Glasgow wrote: "Thrilled! Got tickets to Glasgow2014 athletics finals on my birthday and hopefully seeing EilidhChild win."

But Child, the European 400 metres hurdles silver medallist, herself later Tweeted: "So my parents were unsuccessful at getting tickets for @Glasgow2014 let's hope more become available later".

More successful was Hugh Davies, father of Paralympic Aled, the F42 London discus gold medallist, who wrote: "I've received Glasgow 2014 tickets can't wait to see my son compete for wales".

Fans were today receiving e-mails telling them whether their applications for Glasgow 2014 tickets had been successful or notFans were today receiving e-mails telling them whether their applications for Glasgow 2014 tickets had been successful or not

But, by and large, the controversy that marred the ticketing process for last year's Olympics and Paralympics in London appeared to be absent.

"Today marks yet another exciting moment in the journey to Glasgow 2014 and it's a real pleasure to share the details of which great live sporting moments Games fans will be part of next summer," said Ty Speer, deputy chief executive of Glasgow 2014.

"The overwhelming enthusiasm demonstrated by hundreds of thousands of people already guarantees tremendous crowds across the board for Commonwealth athletes.

"This is a real vote of confidence and it's clear that so many people intend to make sure this is going to be a great Games in Glasgow."

Everyone who has applied for tickets will be offered the opportunity to buy more tickets during an exclusive on-sale period before any remaining tickets are placed on general sale in late October.
