Glasgow 2014 has revealed that 2.3 million ticket requests have been received as ticket applications closeSeptember 16 - More than 2.3 million requests have been received for the one million tickets available for next year's Commonwealth Games, Glasgow 2014 revealed as the four-week application window closed today.

Organisers claimed that the "overwhelming demand already confirms Glasgow 2014 as one of the most popular events in Scotland's history", but the volume of applications also means that demand has completely outstripped supply in a number of sports, including swimming, athletics, track cycling, artistic gymnastics and triathlon.

For those competitions, as well as for diving, judo, mountain cycling and shooting, tickets will be allocated by means of a "fair and simple" draw, with the successful applicants being notified between September 30 and October 7 before payment is taken.

"The first medal of Glasgow 2014 should go to members of the public for their fantastic support for the 4,500 athletes who will be coming here to compete," said Ty Speer, Glasgow 2014's deputy chief executive.

"There has been incredible demand for tickets and early indications suggest that Glasgow 2014 is shaping up to be a truly historic occasion.

"There has been a lot of competition for tickets and some sports have been heavily oversubscribed."

A number of Glasgow 2014 ambassadors, including Olympic and Commonwealth medallists such as Sir Chris Hoy, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Tom Daley, Nicola Adams and Michael Jamieson, headed up the ticketing campaign, while former athletes Susan Egelstaff and David Carry supported the programme on a two-week school tour with official mascot Clyde.

"We would like to thank everyone for their support and their interest in buying tickets and we will now begin the process of working through the applications," Speer said.

"The system has worked well and has coped with the sometimes extremely high demand and we would like to thank our official ticketing services provider Ticketmaster for ensuring the process ran smoothly.

"We look forward to getting in touch with people at the end of the month with news of their application."

Glasgow 2014 will see athletes competing in 17 sports across 11 days of elite competition.
