March 10 - The Royal Mint has released a special edition of its Glasgow 2014 50 pence coin ©The Royal MintPremium editions of the specially designed Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games 50 pence coin have been released by the Royal Mint and are now available to purchase.

The new coin is available as a double-thickness Piedfort coin in sterling silver, and will be in high demand according to the Royal Mint following on from the success of the London 2012 50p piece released in the build-up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The new coin, designed by Alex Loudon, will feature a cyclist and a runner along with lettering inspired by renowned Glasgow-born artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and will be finished by the Scottish Saltire.

Only 1,000 collectors, visitors to the Games or international enthusiasts will be able to secure one of the strictly limited edition coins which are priced at £100 ($166/€120).

They will be presented in a Royal Mint display case and completed with a certificate of authenticity and a booklet exploring the story behind Glasgow 2014.
