July 6 - Beijing 2008 Olympic 400 metres champion Christine Ohuruogu has been omitted from the British team for the European Championships in Barcelona at the end of the month due to a persistent quad injury, it was announced today.

The Londoner, who also won a gold medal at the World Championships in Osaka in 2007, has been suffering from the injury over the last few weeks and was forced out of the recent trials for the European Championships in Birmingham because of it.

The 26-year-old had already announced she would miss the Super8 event in Glasgow tomorrow and the British Grand Prix in Gateshead on Saturday (July 10) but is now set to miss the European Championships which start on July 27.

Ohuruogu said: "Initially we thought it was not serious but now it seems more serious and I will be out for the next few weeks.

"I am preparing for the rest of the season as well as I can despite the setback.

"I am remaining positive and keeping my head focused."

It will be the second consecutive occasion that Ohuruogu has missed the European Championships.

Four years ago she had to withdraw from the event in Gothenburg on the eve of the competition when it emerged that she had missed three out-of-competition drugs tests, which eventually led to her being banned for three months.

Ohuruogu’s compatriot Nicola Sanders has also been hampered by injuries this season and has only been selected for the 4x400m relay with Lee McConnell now set to run the individual event.

Meanwhile, veteran sprinter Christian Malcolm (pictured) has been selected to compete in the 200m in Barcelona with Dwain Chambers and 22-year-old James Dasaolu running in the 100m.

Britain has a number of strong medal chances in Spain with Mo Farah and Chris Thompson have both been selected for the 5,000 and 10,000m.

World champion Phillips Idowu will be looking to add to his medal collection in the triple jump with fellow Berlin medallists Jenny Meadows and Lisa Dobriskey also expected to claim places on the podium in the 800m and 1,500m respectively.

William Sharman and Andy Turner compete in 110m hurdles with Dai Greene ranked number one in Europe in the 400m hurdles while Martyn Rooney has twice broken 45 seconds over 400m to top the European rankings.

Another strong favourite for gold is double world champion Jessica Ennis who will be looking to claim a first European title in the heptathlon.
