June 4 - Budapst would need HUF 30.8 billion (£10.9 billion/$15.9 billion) worth of infrastructure improvements if it is to successfully host the 2020 Olympics, the City Council has admitted.

The Council again agreed last December to investigate the possibility of hosting the Games in Hungary for the first time.

The bid has been in the planning for four years already but only now are figures starting to emerge about how much work is needed.

Budapest would need to make HUF 20.4 billion (£6.9 billion/$10 billion)  in transportation developments and HUF 6 billion (£1.7 billion/£2.5 billion) in athletic-facility and media developments, including the construction of the Olympic Village, in order to host the 2020 Olympics, an independent study has concluded.

The plans would include construction work on 500 hectares in Budapest, three new bridges built on the Danube River and at least one metro line, four football stadiums, 11 new sports centres, 61 kilometres of new city roads, 300km of highways and 400km of country roads

It is planned that Hungarian tax-payers would fund 90 per cent of the costs with the reminder coming from private investors.

The project would add 0.1 per cent to Hungary's Gross Domestic Product growth between 2015 and 2019 according to calculations in the plan to be discussed by the Council.
