June 1 - BMW has extended its relationship with the Olympic Movement by reaching an agreement to sponsor the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) in a deal worth $24 million (£16 million).

The German company is already a Tier One sponsor of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics and the major supporter of Munich's bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics.

It will now replace General Motors as the automobile sponsor of the USOC.

Their agreement ended after the Olympics in Beijing and the USOC had been searching for a replacement ever since.

The USOC also spoke to Volkswagen, the automobile partner of the Sochi 2014 Olympics and Paralympics.

The latest deal, news of which first appeared in Sports Business Journal, will run through the Rio 2016 Olympics.

BMW are the latest blue chip company to sign deals with the USOC since Lisa Baird was appointed as the chief marketing officer in January 2009.

Among those to commit themselves in the past few months are to the USOC are Proctor and Gamble, Adeco, Deloitte and BP.

BMW plans to use electric cars during London 2012 to transport all athletes, technical officials, media London 2012 representatives, national Olympic committees, the IOC and other marketing partners around the venues.
