Badminton, along with rhythmic gymnastics, formally agreed earlier this week to ratify the move from a proposed temporary arena at Greenwich in East London to Wembley in North West London.  

Sir Craig, who is now a member of the International Olympic Committee's ruling Executive Committee, claimed that the move makes perfect sense for both sports as well as the London 2012 organisers in a difficult economic climate.

He told insidethegames: "Both federations have obviously realised that in these difficult times, it makes little sense to create a temporary arena in Greenwich which would have been removed after the Games.

"With a world-class venue like Wembley Arena in place, the move is a natural fit and both federations must be praised for their cooperation and support in making the move happen."

Sir Craig also revealed that he is glad that another part of London will now benefit even more from  the capital hosting the Olympics.

He said: "The move is great for North London which is now turning into one of the main hubs for the London 2012 Olympics.

"Obviously East London and Stratford will host the Olympic Park and Olympic Village but with this announcement, North London now has badminton and rhythmic gymnastics on show as well as the semi-finals and finals of the football tournament at Wembley Stadium.

"As a former badminton player and former President of International Badminton Federation, I am particularly pleased that the sport now has stability heading into the London 2012 Games.

"I have been waiting for the move to be confirmed for a long time and I am delighted that everything has now been approved and we can look forward to a fantastic Games at world-class venues."
