May 20 - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has appointed Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) as the Host News Agency for the Singapore 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games which are due to open on August 4.

As the Host News Agency, SPH will provide comprehensive photographic coverage of the Games while registered members of the media will be able to download SPH’s high-resolution images free of charge via the Singapore 2010 website.

SPH, whose stable of newspapers includes the Straits Times, Business Times and The New Paper, will also provide editorial coverage of Singapore 2010 Games so that readers around the world will be able to follow the inaugural event closely.

The appointment of SPH, which employs more than a 1,000 journalists, as the Host News Agency ensures that the editorial and pictorial coverage of the Games will be of high quality for both the international and local media’s use as well as for posterity, the IOC claim.

Goh Kee Nguan, the chief executive of Singapore 2010, said: "This being the first Youth Olympic Games, we hope to interest media from all over the world to cover the Games.

"With SPH onboard as the Host News Agency, I am confident that we will be able to provide a high quality of editorial and pictorial output that will help media from around the world in their coverage of the Games."

SPH will put in place a team of photographers to cover the Games starting from the pre-Games period in July 2010.

During the Games, captioned photographs of selected sports competitions, culture and education programme activities and other Games-related activities such as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and the Singapore-leg of the Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame will also be available for registered media to download for editorial use at no charge.

On the editorial front, media can look forward to tapping on SPH’s supply of news stories covering the different aspects of the Singapore 2010 Games, the IOC said.

Patrick Daniel, editor-in-chief of English and Malay Newspapers at SPH said: "SPH is glad to be in the forefront of the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games, delivering content for the international and local media’s use.

"We look forward to a fruitful partnership with the IOC and SYOGOC, leading to a successful Singapore 2010 Games, with good exposure internationally and locally."

Kevan Gosper, the chairman of the IOC's Press Commission, said: "The IOC is delighted to be able to appoint Singapore Press Holdings as the Host News Agency for Singapore 2010.

"This is an important appointment and SPH will play an important role in the overall success of the Games by offering professional news-agency style text and photographic coverage of the Games for a worldwide audience.

"We look forward to working with them."
