The fourth seeds saw off the Russian duo Igor Andreev and Elena Dementieva 6-4 6-7 7-6 in the mixed doubles to claim a 2-1 win to finish top of Group B and set up a final against Group A winners Spain.

Earlier in the singles matches, Murray thumped Andreev 6-0 6-1 after Robson was beaten 6-4 6-0 by world number five Dementieva.

The win takes Britain to its first Hopman Cup Final after Murray and Robson have so far this week seen off the challenge of Kazakhstan, Germany and now Russia to take their mixed doubles record together to three wins and no losses.

Murray was quick to praise Robson’s mixed doubles form which allowed Britain to make the final.

The Scot said: "I've got to say thanks to Laura.

"She was awesome today and did a great job.

"In the mixed the guys are supposed to dominate a match but every time I tried to we lost the point so I just let her do it all herself and she did great."

On Britain’s chances against third seeds Spain, Murray said: "It will be a tough match as he [Tommy Robredo of Spain] has played great here.

"Laura definitely has a chance to win her match [against Maria Jose Sanchez Martinez] and I definitely want to win the tournament."

Following the successful experiment together, the British duo could be set to team up in the mixed doubles at the London 2012 Olympics following its reintroduction to the Games for the first time since Paris in 1924.
