October 1 - Caster Semenya, the world 800 metres champion at the centre of a row over her gender, has been given R20,000 (£1,600) by a strip club in Johannesburg after they were reported for a giant billboard which appeared to poke fun at her expense.

Teazers owner Lolly Jackson said that because the row about his "gender testing" billboard had centred around Semenya, he would give her the money.

He said: "The problem with the entire situation is someone innocent has been drawn in, and therefore, just like we reward our athletes, we would like Caster to enjoy her success rather than the negativity that has followed her.

"Ultimately she brought home gold, and if it was not for mismanagement, would not be embroiled in this saga."

The billboard shows an almost naked woman lying suggestively on her back, with "No need for Gender Testing!" written below her.

Complaints about it were made to the country's Advertising Standards Authority by Athletics South Africa (ASA).

Jackson insisted that "at no stage was this advertisement ever produced with Caster in mind".

He told the ASA it was instead a dig at his competitors.

Jackson said: "This advert was created before the gender row came to light and its existence and publication is purely coincidental.

"Teazers is merely trying to assure our valued clientele that we have no inter-sexed women, as is so common and disturbingly prevalent in the adult entertainment industry."

Jackson also took the opportunity to take a swipe at Leonard Chuene, the President of ASA, who has admitted lying about knowing whether Semenya had been subjected to gender testing before the World Championships in Berlin in August.

"That said, at least we tell the truth."
