September 26 - The powerful Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) has officially asked the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) to exclude Fiji from next year's Commonwealth Games in New Delhi after the caretaker Government failed to present a time schedule for the restoration of democracy in the country.

Fiji is facing exclusion from the Games in the India capital after their membership of the Commonwealth was suspended earlier this month because its military dictatorship have refused to hold elections.

The country's sports leaders have claimed that they should not be excluded from the Games, which are due to open on October 3, 2010, because the situation has nothing to do with them and it would be unfair on its competitors, including the rugby sevens team who are one of the favourites for a gold medal.

But their already slim chances have taken an even further nose-dive after the CMAG, who met in New York, appealed to the CGF to impose a ban, which would be one of the most high-profile consequences of the suspension from the Commonwealth.

A statement said: "In relation to the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, consistent with the precedent of the earlier decision of CMAG, the Group requested the Commonwealth Games Federation to take into serious consideration CMAG's decision in relation to the suspension of the Fiji Islands, in determining Fiji's participation in the Games."

A final decision is due to be taken at the CGF Annual Assembly in New Delhi next month.
