Leandro Negre, the newly elected head of the FIH, made the pledge to calm fears about the event being moved.

 

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) also recently said that they had no plans to move the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi after nearly 200 people were killed by terrorists in Mumbai.

 

There had also been concern that preparations for the hockey event, which New Delhi was awarded in November 2007, were behind schedule.

 

Negre said: "I am feeling very comfortable regarding the 2010 FIH World Cup in India.

 

"The FIH signed the memorandum of understanding for our showcase event in August this year.

 

"At this moment, the IOA (Indian Olympic Association) is our partner in organising the World Cup, and I have the feeling that much progress has been made in the last few months.

 

"At this stage, the 2010 men’s World Cup will take place in India.

 

"That’s why it is not necessary to have a look at another venue.

 

"However, the FIH will monitor the situation in India carefully to make sure that the event will be organised at the highest possible level as we will have a close look on the political situation in India too."

 

The tournament will be the 12th edition of the World Cup, which was first held in 1971.

 

It is due to take place over two weeks from March 7 to 20, 2010, at New Delhi's Dhyan Chand National Stadium.

 

It is the first time that India have staged the event since 1982 when it was held in Mumbai, then known as Bombay, when Pakistan won the men's competition and Australia the women's.

 

The last World Cup was held in Monchengladbach two years ago when hosts Germany claimed the men's gold and Spain the women.
