O'Neill, who is the current captain of Loughborough Lightning netball team who play in the Super League, will be responsible for all the planning, organisation and management of the Olympic swimming, diving, synchronised swimming and water polo events plus Paralympic swimming events. 

These events take place at the Aquatics Centre in the Olympic Park in East London and open water swimming takes place at The Serpentine in Hyde Park.

O'Neill, who has worked at British Swimming since 2005, said: “I am absolutely delighted to be joining London 2012.

"Thanks to the support of British Swimming, I have been fortunate to have worked on some fantastic events so far, and the chance to work at the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games is without doubt the most exciting opportunity of my career.

"A Games in our home country is a once in a lifetime event.

"From the history of the Serpentine in Hyde Park, where the 10km Open Water Swimming will take place, to the groundbreaking design of the new Aquatics Centre, working on the project will be particularly special for me, having grown up in the Lea Valley.

"I’m looking forward to using the latest innovations in technology and sports presentation to deliver competitions which demonstrate to a new generation why aquatics events are so exciting.”

David Luckes , the Head of Sport Competition at London 2012, said: “Charlotte has a lot of experience and is a very welcome addition to our team.

"Swimming and the other aquatics disciplines will be amongst the showpiece events at the London 2012 Games and she will play a crucial role in their successful delivery.”

David Sparkes, the chief executive of British Swimming, said: "British Swimming is delighted Charlotte has been appointed to this role within LOCOG.

"Charlotte joined us in 2005 and through our staff development programme has demonstrated time and time again she is a world-class sports administrator.

"We are confident that with Charlotte at the helm in London we will witness a memorable Games in the fabulous London Aquatics Centre in 2012."

O'Neill's key responsibilities include being the focal point for liaison with the international swimming federation, FINA, and the International Paralympic Committee.  

She will ensure that the competition is organised in accordance with international federation rules, the International Olympic Committee Charter and the Host City Contract. 

O'Neill will also liaise with other functional areas to ensure the co-ordinated delivery of support services such as accreditation, venue operations, medical services and volunteers.

She will travel to the Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games to see what lessons can be learned from the events there and will become full-time later in the year. 

O'Neill, a participant on the 2008 intake of UK Sport’s International Leadership Programme, was born and brought up in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, very close to the Olympic Park site, and currently lives in Loughborough. 

O'Neill is the eighth competition manager that London 2012 have announced for the 26 sports following archery, badminton, basketball, fencing, sailing, shooting and tennis.
