World Games_logo_May_25May 26 - Christophe Dubi, sports director of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), has reaffirmed the importance of the 2013 World Games, which will be hosted in Cali, Colombia.

Dubi renewed the promise of IOC President Jacques Rogge to take part in the Opening Ceremony of the World Games on July 25 next year.

The Games have been under IOC patronage since 1997.

Dubi also underlined the challenge facing the eight sports – baseball, climbing, karate, roller skating, softball, squash, wakeboard and wushu – vying for inclusion on the Olympic programme from 2020.

The sports will be appearing at the World Games in Cali next year, when they have the opportunity to demonstrate to the IOC how they shape up in a major event.

The sport that makes it onto the Olympic list will be selected by the IOC in October 2013.

"Exciting days lie ahead," said Dubi.

"Eight sports for one position."

Rugby sevens will no longer be played at the World Games following Cali, as it now has a place on the Olympic programme scheduled to kick off at Rio 2016.

Rodrigo Otoya, the President of the World Games Local Organising Committee (CLOC) for Cali 2013, also announced here that RCN Televisión (Radio Cadena Nacional) and the Martha Herrera production company, would be the host broadcaster of the World Games.

RCN is one of the two major television channels in Colombia, whilst Martha Herrera has a track record producing sports events.

Of the annoucement, International World Games Association (IWGA) President Ron Froehlich said "the decision regarding the television production is crucial.

"The deal paves the way to conclusion of an international media distribution and a marketing contract with a prominent company."

The World Games in Cali run from July 25 to August 4, with more than 30 sports on show.
