Glasgow general_viewJanuary 30 - Glasgow today formally declared its interest in bidding for the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games as it emerged that Sweden may also put forward a bid for the event.

As already reported on insidethegames, the Scottish city is keen to host the Games and utilise the new facilities that they are building for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which they are hosting.

The British Olympic Association (BOA) last month invited applications from cities interested in putting themselves forward but by the time today's deadline was reached only Glasgow had come forward.

Over the course of the next four weeks the BOA will work together with representatives from Glasgow to discuss, test and further develop the submission, they said.

The BOA Board will make a recommendation to the National Olympic Committee which will decide whether to go ahead with a bid or not on February 27,  ahead of the deadline for the BOA to submit a bid to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on March 1.

So far the only two confirmed bidders for the Games are Buenos Aires and Medellín in Colombia.

But Abuja in Nigeria, Monterrey in Mexico and Kaspiysk in Russia have already said that they are likely to bid for the competition, which involves 3,600 athletes, aged 15 to 18, participating across all of the 28 Olympic sports in 12 days of competition.

While Sweden have also emerged as possible candidates after Stefan Lindberg, the chairman of the Swedish Olympic Committee (SOC), revealed that they had already held discussions with Gothenburg, Malmo and Stockholm about a possible bid.

The IOC are due produce a short list of candidate cities next January, before announcing the winning host city in June 2013.

The inaugural Summer Youth Olympic Games took place in Singapore in 2010 and the 2014 Games will take place in Nanjing

The first Youth Winter Games were successfully held in Innsbruck earlier this month.
