Copenhagen celebrate_being_awarded_2014_World_Badminton_ChampionshipsDecember 29 - Denmark has been announced as the host of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships in 2014.

Badminton Denmark, Sport Event Denmark and Wonderful Copenhagen combined to launch Denmark's campaign, chosen by the BWF Council.

At the same time Guangzhou in China was awarded the 2013 World Championships.

But the awarding of the event to Copenhagen is another major coup for the Danish capital, which has bid successfully in recent years for a succession of top events.

It will be the fourth time Copenhagen has hosted the World Badminton Championships, having previously staged it in 1983, 1991 and 1999.

Lars Lundov, the chief executive of Sport Event Denmark said: "I am very proud.

"Denmark continues the fine line of major and significant international sports events on Danish soil – just think of the impressive UCI Road World Championships two and a half months ago – this is a result of working innovatively, professionally and working together.

"This makes the big difference in a world of increasing global competition in bitting for sports events.

"BWF World Championships 2014 will be a great event.

"Badminton Denmark has over many years made world class athletes that can put on a fantastic sports show for everyone watching.

"Furthermore the federation is very experienced and professional."

"To play on home ground is the best possible platform for our players to win the prestigious World Championships medals.

"I am convinced that the home ground advantage will act as a leverage for the entire Danish badminton community.

"I would like to thank Sport Event Denmark, The Municipality of Ballerup and Wonderful Copenhagen for the unique teamwork."

The Lord Mayor of the City of Copenhagen, Frank Jensen, added: "This great event gives us the opportunity to continue the folk festival that we all enjoyed at the recent UCI Road World Championships 2011 in Copenhagen.

"This underlines that Copenhagen is a city where event owners choose to stage their major, international events.

"Since Copenhagen hosted the BWF World Badminton Championships in 1991, the city has undergone a complete make-over and I am proud to show it to all the visiting spectators, fans and players, but also to offer the local citizens top class badminton live as I'm pleased to invite the Copenhageners to a world class sports event".

The 2014 World Badminton Championships is due to take place during August.
