Julie-Page-france rdax_300x450December 26 - Julie Page, whose points helped the GB senior women's team achieve their best ever result at this year's European Championships, has been recognised as the British Basketball Player of the Year with Devon Van Oostrum picking up the new honour of Emerging Athlete 2011.

As the British Basketball Player of the Year, Page will receive the Olympic Athlete of the Year Award for basketball and joins the likes of Luol Deng (2007 and 2008), Jo Leedham (2009) and Pops Mensah-Bonsu (2010) in receiving the accolade.

Page was awarded the title following an outstanding summer leading the British women to their historical second round place in EuroBasket 2011.

The power forward averaged 10 points a game and 7.5 rebounds as the team came within three points of defeating eventual European champions Russia and lost by a single point to basketball powerhouses Lithuania.

Following EuroBasket, Page signed with the Polish side Energa Torun where she scored 23 points in her first game for the side and continues to make strong contributions in the Polish League.

Julie was thrilled with the award: "I am honoured and immensely proud to have been named the British Basketball Player of the Year 2011.

"Just to be considered alongside so many talented and accomplished players is extremely humbling, but to actually win the award is a tremendous privilege.

"This year has been an incredible ride for both me personally and the Standard Life GB women's team. I would like to extend my gratitude and eternal thanks to everyone who has believed in and supported me throughout my career."

Devon Van_Oostrum_playing_for_GBVan Oostrum (pictured) made his debut this year for the British senior men's team following strong performances with the GB under-20 men where he averaged 13 points, seven rebounds and a tournament-high five assists per game.

As a result Chris Finch called him up to the senior team where he shone during the Olympic Test Event in August.

He had an outstanding performance against world No9 side Australia when he sunk a crucial basket to send the game into overtime.

At just 18-years-old the point-guard also featured heavily in the men's EuroBasket 2011 campaign in Lithuania, playing in three of the team's five games lasting 23 minutes on court against the eventual winners, Spain.

"I am so happy to have been awarded this title, especially since it was my first official outing with the GB senior men's side," said Van Ostrum.

"The under-20 and senior games were a great chance to play with older and more experienced players.

"I learnt a lot from them and also made some new friends along the way.

"Without their help I wouldn't have won this award."

The British Basketball Performance Director, Chris Spice, added: "Both Julie and Devon have had great seasons for GB this summer and I congratulate them on their awards.

"They also both know the value of hard work and determination and we hope they will continue to improve and become major players in our Olympic campaign next year."
