Coni Servizi__logoOctober 14 - Rome has made another significant appointment as it continues to build a team to bid for the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics by announcing that Coni Servizi Engineering & Consulting has been chosen to be its lead technical partner.

They have assembled an elite consortium of local and international specialised engineering and architectural companies, including Populous, designers of the London 2012 Olympic Stadium, who will have specific responsibility for competition and non-competition venue master planning and design.

Other firms involved include Studio Zoppini, who worked on Pyeongchang's successful bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, and Shesa, who were involved in Juventus' new stadium.

Also part of the consortium is Nussli, who have been involved in several Olympics, including London.

Coni Servizi will also be supported by a group of experienced, in-house architects as Rome prepares to take on rivals Baku, Doha, Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo.

"This collaborative and multi-lateral approach to supporting Roma 2020 will not only offer our Olympic bid the best possible blend of international experience and Italian capabilities, but will also enable our company to grow and develop a core, sustainable legacy for Italian and international sport for the future," said said Raffaele Pagnozzi, general secretary of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI).

Rome, which last hosted the Olympics in 1964, is centring its bid around mostly existing venues used for the 1960 Games, notably the expansive Foro Italico complex that hosts the 80,000-seat Stadio Olimpico, a newly built 10,500-seat tennis stadium and outdoor pools used for the 2009 swimming World Championships.

"Overlay and temporary venue planning is one of the key elements of Rome's bid," said Ernesto Albanese, the managing director of Rome 2020.

"We are very pleased to count on the innovative combination of local resources and international expertise brought to us by Coni Servizi.

"This approach is critical in our effort to minimize capital investments while ensuring a responsible and sustainable legacy for the city, for Italian sport and for the entire Olympic Movement going forward."

This latest appointment follows the announcement earlier this month that Helios Partners had been appointed as its lead consultants.
