South Africa had won the first leg in Johannesburg 3-0 to give them a comfortable lead going into the return, and they struck early in the second period to give them a commanding lead.

Despite being pegged back, there was never any doubt that the South Africans would progress, and coach Joseph Mkhonza said: "This will be Banyana Banyana's first appearance at the Olympics since the team came into being in 1993 and the joy on the players.

"We want to thank our sponsors Sasol, SAFA (South African Football Association) and South Africans in general for their support.

"We are now preparing for the Olympics."

SAFA's President Kirsten Nematandani said: "This is a proud moment for the entire country.

"Mkhonza, his staff and the brave Banyana Banyana have done your country proud.

"Let us now prepare for the Games and show the world that South African football has really come of age."

Nigeria will hope to join South Africa when they contest the second leg of their qualifying tie with Cameroon, holding a 2-1 advantage from the first leg.
