Miss_Scotland_swimming_as_part_of_Glasgow_2014_eventApril 25 - The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 represent an "unprecedented" opportunity to inspire a generation of young Scots to take up sport and healthy lifestyles, according to the Scottish Conservatives.

The party today launched its sports manifesto for the elections in Scotland on May 5 with proposals to build on the investment being made for the Games by spending an extra £27 million ($45 million) in the period around the Commonwealth Games on sport activities, and £40 million ($66 million) in new capital infrastructure.

Other pledges include encouraging all schools to provide two hours of PE, with trained teachers, and offer free universal health checks for people aged between 40 and 74.

The "fit4life" manifesto states that the Tories' plans can "change Scotland's culture and bring about improvements to lifestyles that will finally challenge Scotland's poor health record".

Speaking at the launch in Edinburgh, Scottish Conservatives leader Annabel Goldie said: "With the Commonwealth Games, the Ryder Cup and two Opens coming to Scotland in the next few years, and of course the Olympic Games in London, the next few years will be incredible for Scottish sport.

"They will be an amazing, unprecedented few years for Scotland.

"What a chance to inspire an entire generation of young Scots and encourage them to lead active, healthy lifestyles.

"It is common sense to seize the opportunity for a healthier Scotland, to make our country fit for life.

"With this manifesto, that's exactly what Scottish Conservatives will do."

Former Scotland rugby captain and Grand Slam winner Gavin Hastings added: "Whether you have a natural talent or just enjoy playing, we all derive so much inspiration from sport. Seeing a home-grown sports star in action can often be the key to inspiring thousands of others to get involved.

"That's why a plan of action to get Scots healthier and leave a lasting legacy from the Commonwealth Games is so welcome.

"The message is loud and clear – we need to get Scotland fit for life and these common sense plans from the Scottish Conservatives will help us do just that."
