Yokohama_triathlon_2009April 20 - The next stage of the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship, due to take place in Yokohama in May, has been postponed due to fears over the nuclear situation in Japan following last month's devastating earthquake and tsunami.

The International Triahtlon Union (ITU) is in discussions with the Local Organising Committee, Yokohama and the Japanese Triathlon Union (JTU) to rearrange a date to host the event.

Marisol Casado, ITU President and International Olympic Committee member, said: "We have been following the situation in Japan very closely and felt that once the Japanese Government raised the alert on the nuclear situation to the highest level of seven, it was too risky to stage an event there in May.

"The safety and health of our athletes, coaches, officials and staff should not be compromised.

"We are in discussions to re-schedule it later in the season.

"Our thoughts and concerns are with the Japanese people as they recover from the devastating earthquake, tsunami and nuclear power plant situation."

Japan has already lost the opportunity to host the World Skating Championships after they were moved from Tokyo to Moscow following the disaster.

The World Championship Series started last week in Sydney with Canadian Paula Findlay winning the women's title, with Javier Gomez of Spain taking the men's crown ahead of Britain's Jonathan Brownlee.

The Series now moves onto Madrid in Spain on June 4-5.
