Hannah_Marshall_with_boxer_of_the_year_awardApril 18 – Highly rated London 2012 Olympic medal prospects Anthony Ogogo and Savannah Marshall claimed top honours at the annual Amateur Boxing Association of England (ABAE) awards in Sheffield.

Ogogo picked up the Senior Boxer of the Year following an outstanding 2010 while the talented Marshall was crowned Senior Female Boxer of the Year

Last year saw Ogogo make a successful comeback from injury by winning a silver medal at Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games last October where he beat India's formidable Olympic medallist Vijender Singh on route to the final

The 22-year-old middleweight star from Lowestoft also achieved silver at the Gee Bee tournament in Helsinki but was in Finland with the GB Boxing squad on the night of the awards so Marshall accepted the award on his behalf.

"Anthony is a huge talent on the GB Podium squad and is a role model for young people with a sporting dream," said Rob McCracken, the GB Boxing performance director.

"He has shown dedication to not only reach such a high standard, but to regain that excellence after injury. He is a focussed individual and I hope he continues his successes to make the London 2012 team."

Marshall claimed her award after winning silver at the women's World Championships in Barbados last September.

The 19-year-old from Hartlepool has been boxing at Hartlepool Headland Amateur Boxing Club since she was 12, long before the International Olympics Committee (IOC) considered adding female boxing as an Olympic sport.

"Savannah has shown considerable improvement over the past year and to win a silver medal in a World Championship at the age of nineteen was incredible," McCracken added.

"She is a very exciting prospect for the future and we're proud to have her on the GB Boxing programme."

Both Ogogo and Marshall are part of the British Amateur Boxing Association's (BABA) Podium Squad which trains at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield (EIS Sheffield).

Junior Boxer of the Year went to 16-year-old Tom Ward from Birtley ABC who brought home gold at the 2010 European Championships in Ukraine and is a strong contender to compete at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

The Junior Female Boxer of the Year went to 17-year-old Sarah Rostron from Knowlsey who is the 2010 European Female Youth Champion Sarah Rostron as well as the 2010 Junior ABAE Champion.

"All our winners are excellent ambassadors for the sport," said Richard Caborn, the President of the ABAE.

"Our junior boxers are fully focussed on representing Great Britain in the 2016 Olympic Games and already are showing great dedication and promise.

"I look forward to seeing them develop their skills further."
