boxing2March 26 – The British Amateur Boxing Association (BABA) has been praised by Minister for Sport and Olympics Hugh Robertson after being nominated for the title of Sport National Governing Body of the Year in the Sport Industry Awards 2011.

The nomination recognises the significant progress in the management of the GB Olympic boxing programme since the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and the BABA's achievements in 2010 based on a range of criteria including performance, leadership, media relations and marketing, event delivery, financial management, commercial activities and making a tangible difference to the sport.

"I was hugely impressed with the depth and breadth of the BABA Boxing set-up," said Robertson following a visit to BABA's training facility in Sheffield.

"After meeting the coaches, athletes and support staff, I am confident boxing will continue to deliver medal success and make a significant contribution to our efforts in leaving a sporting legacy from London 2012."

Derek Mapp, chairman of the BABA, said: "This is a superb reward for everyone connected with BABA and recognises the significant progress we have made - inside and outside of the ring - in a very short space of time.

"We have strived to create a 'one team' ethos at BABA and it is very satisfying to receive recognition that rewards not only the superb performance of the boxers and coaching team, but also the hard work of all the people within the organisation that have contributed to its success through the excellent management of the elite programme, increasing commercial revenue and building the profile of amateur boxing and its top athletes."

The BABA was established in 2008 under the leadership of Mapp to run the £8.9 million ($14.2 million) - which has since been increased to £9.4 million ($15.1 million) - Olympic Boxing Programme funded by UK Sport.

It was set-up with the support of UK Sport in the aftermath of the Beijing 2008 Olympics where the management of the previous boxing programme had been beset by difficulties and a breakdown in relationships.

BABA is wholly owned by the Home Nation Amateur Boxing Associations of England, Scotland and Wales.

Liz Nicholl, the chief executive of UK Sport, said: "With a home Games approaching these are exciting times for all Olympic and Paralympic sports in the UK.

"BABA is doing a great job of capitalising on this opportunity, with the establishment of the world class performance programme in Sheffield and the integration of the women's programme as a new Olympic discipline for 2012."

In 2010, boxers from Great Britain's male and female squads won 32 medals in seven elite competitions, including three silvers and two bronzes at the men's European Championships, two silvers at the Women's World Championships and two golds and four silvers at the Commonwealth Games.

The Olympic medal potential demonstrated by the squad led UK Sport to award BABA an additional £571,000 ($916,000) in December 2010.

Outside of the ring, BABA agreed a three-year deal for Lucozade Sport to be its Official Nutrition Partner in July 2010.

It also secured the return of live domestic amateur boxing to the BBC when it agreed a three-year deal for the Corporation to televise its newly created GB Amateur Boxing Championship.

The first of these was held in Liverpool in November 2010 and was attended by more than 3,500 people.

The award winner will be decided at a ceremony on May 11, 2011 while the other nominees in the Sport NGB of the Year category are the Football League, the Rugby Football League and UK Athletics.
