Yoyogi_National_StadiumMarch 13 - This month's World Figure Skating Championships in Tokyo are in doubt after the massive earthquake and tsunami that has devastated Japan, the International Skating Union (ISU) President Ottavio Cinquanta has admitted.

The ISU initially announced on Friday (March 11) that it had no plans to cancel the event scheduled for March 21-27, quoting the Japanese Skating Federation (JSF) as saying that the competition venue - the Yoyogi National Stadium in central Tokyo - was unscathed amid the chaos.

But Cinquanta has now admitted that they are reconsidering that decision and that they may move the event - or even cancel it - following the risk of radioactvitiy.

"The recent developments since Saturday, in particular the developments in the Fukushima nuclear plant are very worrisome and also resulted in travel advisories from many countries to avoid travelling to Japan until the situation is settled," said Cinquanta.

"The ISU continues to monitor the situation in cooperation with the JSF and the Japanese authorities in order to come to a conclusion as to maintaining or cancelling the Championships in Tokyo scheduled for next week."

If it goes ahead, the event has already been given a boost after South Korea's Olympic champion Kim Yu Na said that she still plans to compete in the event.

Cinquanta revealed that the final decision whether to hold the event would be made this week after discussing the situation further with the JSF.

The ISU have promised to release more details by the latest tomorrow morning.

Yesterday, the Nagoya International Women's Marathon scheduled for today was cancelled by Japanese officials.

The race was to serve as a qualifying event for this summer's World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

The Japan Association of Athletics Federations will decide by Tuesday (March 15) a substitute qualifying race for the worlds, perhaps the Nagano Marathon on April 17, they said.
