Glasgow_2014_pipers_with_trainersMarch 14 - More than 750,000 people are wearing their trainers today in support for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games as part of the "Sport Your Trainers" campaign, to coincide with Commonwealth Day.

The six week campaign has drawn widespread support ranging from figures in the world of sport to Government, with people wearing their trainers in schools, police stations and councils across Scotland.

Glasgow 2014 wanted to encourage as many people across the nation as possible to wear their trainers in order demonstrate the country's enthusiasm for hosting the Games.

Organisations supporting the efforts today include the Great Britain Alpine Ski Team, Commonwealth Games Wales, Netball Scotland and even a Starbucks coffee shop in Glasgow Fort, as well as hundreds of schools.

The campaign will run annually on Commonwealth Day up to the start of the Games in 2014.

Chief executive of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games John Scott (pictured) said: "The response we have had to the campaign in its first year is nothing short of overwhelming.

"This has proved that Scotland is a nation wholeheartedly proud to host the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, in 2014, and genuinely see this as a Games that the whole country can get behind and be part of.

"The range of supporters has also been staggering, and not exclusive to Scotland with trainers being worn by Scots where they are around the world.

"We are honoured to have received so much support for the campaign and are more committed than ever to delivering an outstanding Games that will make Scotland even prouder."

In total, the 1.5 million trainers being worn today put together would fit the same distance as ten marathons, 1,088 laps of the Hampden Park athletics track or 162 trips up and down Ben Nevis!

Double Olympic decathlon gold medallist Daley Thompson, who is supporting the campaign, said:  "The Commonwealth Games is very special to me and I'm really looking forward to Glasgow 2014.

"I'll be wearing my trainers on March 14 and hope that hundreds of thousands of people all over Scotland will join me."

Liz McColgan, the 1986 and 1990 Commonwealth Games 10,000 metres champion, is also backing the scheme.

She said: "Anything that combines raising the profile of sport in our country while at the same time encouraging people to become more active is a good thing.

"I'll certainly be wearing my trainers on March 14 and would encourage everyone in Scotland to show their support for the Games by doing the same."
