Robbie_Renwick_at_Sport_Your_Trainers_Day_Glasgow_February_1_2011February 2 - Glasgow 2014 have declared March 14 "Sport Your Trainers" day to encourage Scots to exercise more.

Everyone from business leaders, schoolchildren and doctors to politicians, office workers and housewives will ditch their normal footwear and wear their trainers for the day in support of the Commonwealth Games, Glasgow officials hope.

The date has been chosen because it is Commonwealth Day - which is always the second Monday in every March -  and organisers plan to hold the event on an annual basis until Glasgow stages the Games.

A starter pack is available to download from the Glasgow 2014 website and every local authority is being urged to sign up while schools are being encouraged to relax dress codes so children across the country can enter into the spirit of the event.

Glasgow officials claim that by simply wearing their trainers as they go about their normal everyday business people will feel connected to the upcoming Games.

The event was launched at Scotstoun Leisure Centre by Glasgow 2014 chairman Robert Smith and Robbie Renwick, the Commonwealth Games 200 metres freestyle champion.
