Sean_McGoldrick_Delhi_October_2010January 15 - Welsh Commonwealth Games officials have admitted they are becoming frustrated in the delay over deciding whether boxer Sean McGoldrick should be upgraded to a gold medal after his opponent tested positive for banned performance-enhancing drugs in New Delhi last year.

Sri Lanka's Manju Wanniarachchi failed a drugs test for anabolic steroids after beating McGoldrick in the bantamweight final in India last October but cannot be officially disqualified until the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) have held a hearing into his case.

Chris Jenkins, who was Wales' Chef de Mission in Delhi, claimed that there is nothing they can do but wait.

"The issue they've got is these things are easy to do on site when the Games are on, but to pull together a commission when everyone has gone home is problematic," said Jenkins.

"[CGF President] Mike Fennell is aware of our interest and is mindful of getting a result as quickly as possible.

"Effectively, we are not involved in the appeal.

"It's between the CGF and the Sri Lankan boxer.

"We won't be told when it will take place, only the outcome.

"There's nothing we can say or do, so it's best to say nothing because it's a legal process and we don't want ourselves, or Sean, to prejudice the outcome.

"I'm sure Sean is finding it frustrating.

"All we are doing is saying to him to wait and it will take as long as it takes.

"All I can say is that the CGF are very keen to make sure the process is completed as fast as possible."

If, as expected, Wanniarachchi is found guilt at his hearing, 19-year-old student McGoldrick from Newport would become Wales' third gold medallist of the Games, joining Dai Greene, who won the 400m hurdles, and Robert Weale, who won the men's singles in lawn bowls.
