Patrick_Ekeji_head_and_shouldersJanuary 3 - The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has named the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Patrick Ekeji, as the Chef de Mission of the country's team for next year's Olympics in London.

Sani Ndanusa, the President of the NOC, hopes that Ekeji, a former manager of the country's football team, will help oversee a revival of Nigeria's Olympic fortunes.

Since winning their first gold medals at the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996 when the men's football team and long jumper Chioma Ajunwa both claimed victories, Nigeria have failed to produce another champion.

At Beijing in 2008 they won four medals, a silver and three bronze.

"Efforts have to be geared towards ensuring that we streamline our potential to make for maximum utilisation of those sports that we have high medals capacity," said Ndanusa.

"We have to redouble our efforts and present only sports with high medals attainment at the Olympic Games.

"The era of jamboree is well and truly over for Nigerian sports at international competitions."
