Indonesian sport climber Veddriq Leonardo has been named International World Games Association (IWGA) Athlete of the Month for May.

Leonardo won the men's speed title at the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Cup in Salt Lake City last month.

He defeated Wu Peng of China in the final, clocking 4.95 sec.

The Birmingham 2022 World Games speed champion set a world record of 4.902 at the World Cup in Seoul in April.

He has six World Cup golds so far with three of them coming at Salt Lake City, making it his favourite venue.

Leonardo, who won gold at the Jakarta-Palembang 2018 Asian Games, is hoping to seal the ultimate prize at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games next year.

His main competition for the Olympics in the French capital will be familiar foe and compatriot Kiromal Katibin.

However, Leonardo and Katibin said that the rivalry only exists when they climb.

"We are like brothers," the two top-ranked speed climbers said.

"We train together and we also travel to competitions together."

Leonardo is the first man in sport climbing to break the five-second barrier.
