An emergency meeting has been called by the International Boxing Association (IBA) tomorrow to discuss the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommendation to expel them.

But, while the future of IBA looks grim, it appears brighter for boxing after the IOC appeared to confirm in its report that the sport will feature at Los Angeles 2028, despite it being left off the initial programme.

IBA’s Board of Directors will hold a virtual meeting following the recommendation to de-recognise them at a special IOC Session on June 22, where the roles of President Umar Kremlev and secretary general George Yerolimpos could be questioned.

Kremlev’s immediate position is not thought to be under threat, but Yerolimpos could face hard questions and be made a scapegoat for a decision which leaves IBA fighting for its future.

Kremlev is expected to try to outline a bright future without the Olympics, but several National Federations are set to begin the process of resigning from the governing body and investigate joining the breakaway World Boxing, described by IBA as a "rogue organisation".

"The IBA has failed the sport of Olympic boxing and now there will be opportunity for the sport to be operated in a corruption free environment and in a competent manner," Boxing New Zealand President Steve Hartley said.

New Zealand was one of four countries that was last month suspended by the IBA over its links with World Boxing.

"World Boxing is up and running with recognition in Swiss law and is well placed to lead boxing into the Olympic future," Hartley said.

"The main focus for Boxing New Zealand at present is assisting our athletes to work towards qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics and continue Boxing New Zealand's success at previous Olympic events.

"Boxing New Zealand chairman Keith Walker and myself will continue to support the World Boxing movement and the efforts to secure boxing for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles."

The sport’s place on the programme at Los Angeles 2028 already appears to be assured, according to the 24-page report which is the basis for the recommendation for the IBA to be de-recognised at a special IOC Session on June 22.

The only question appears to be, who will organise the tournament.

in the report, it is claimed that IBA "shows not only one specific point of non-compliance but an accumulation of points of non-compliances with the conditions set out by the IOC.

"Taken separately, each point justifies the conclusion that the IBA did not fulfil the conditions set out by the IOC.

"Hence, the accumulation of all of these points, and the constant lack of drastic evolution throughout the many years, creates a situation of no-return.

"The additional consequence of this situation … is that the IBA should not organise the Olympic Games LA28 boxing tournament."
