Chinese state councillor Shen Yiqin has called for "urgency" as final preparations are made for the delayed Summer World University Games in Chengdu.

The city, famous as the home of giant pandas, is due to host the flagship International University Sports Federation (FISU) event between July 28 and August 8 after it was postponed by two years because of the pandemic.

Shen conducted a two-day tour of venues and facilities as the countdown to the Opening Ceremony reached the 50 days to go mark.

She called for "high quality" preparations in line with the principles of being "simple, safe and splendid", according to Xinhua.

The politician also noted that the FISU Games would be the first major multi-sport event in China since the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party, which took place in October.

It will also be the first multi-sport gathering since China relaxed its strict COVID-19 measures which had shut off the country to most international visitors.

As well as calling for urgency, Shen also asked for "responsibility" in the final stages of preparations.

She added that the event should become a platform for cultural and educational exchange.

State councillor is a high ranking position in the Chinese political system.

Last month, Shen also assessed preparations for the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.
