The 40-year-old shooter, who won mixed trap silver alongside Alessandra Perilli at Tokyo 2020, edged out compatriot Alfio Tomassoni in a closely-fought final to seal gold in the Maltese capital.

There was a shoot-off to decide the winner of the women’s trap final as Lena Bidoli of Luxembourg stunned Perilli, who claimed Olympic bronze in the event two years ago.

Eleanor Bezzina of Malta retained the women’s 10 metres air pistol crown after securing a winning total of 229.4 points.

It is the third time the 46-year-old has won the event having triumphed in 2013 and 2019.

The other shooting gold went to Boris Jeremenko of Monaco who scored 234.6 to secure the men’s 10m air pistol title.

There was double table tennis delight for Malta as they claimed the men’s and women’s team golds courtesy of wins over Luxembourg and Monaco respectively.

Iceland and Cyprus enjoyed much of the success in today's swimming competition.

All three of Cyprus’ golds came in the space of eight minutes after Anna Hadjiloizou set the ball rolling with victory in the women’s 100m butterfly final in 1min 02.97sec.

This was followed by success for Loukas Marinos who clinched men’s 100m butterfly gold in 54.97 and Maria Erokhina who bagged the women’s 200m breaststroke title in 2:30.62.

Snaefridur Jorunnardottir got the first of Iceland’s swimming golds of the day when she touched the wall first in 4:20.16 to win the women’s 400m freestyle title.

Anton McKee delivered Iceland’s second gold with victory in the men’s 200m breaststroke final in 2:14.37 before the country won the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay crown in 8:26.33.

Luxembourg claimed the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay title in 7:28.91 to cap off a day that saw Remi Fabiani earn men’s 100m backstroke gold in 55.97.

Monaco’s Giulia Viacava came out on top in the women’s 100m backstroke final in a time of 1:04.36, while San Marino’s Loris Bianchi finished in 3:59.69 to win men’s 400m freestyle gold.
